Penetration, permeation, sun protection factor and instrumental skin analyses – we test what a formulation actually achieves on and in the skin.
Skin penetration and permeation studies
We routinely carry out penetration and permeation studies on porcine skin – pig skin, the established model for human skin – in Franz diffusion cells.
In doing so we analyse not only how different actives are absorbed, but also how the formulation influences the penetration and permeation behaviour of the active.
Various cytotoxicity investigations can also be carried out in this context on request.
Determination of the sun protection factor by the international method
The protective effect of a well-formulated sunscreen can be influenced by a wide variety of factors, above all the content of UV filter substances in the formulation concerned. Testing sunscreens for their sun protection factor on the skin in practice is therefore indispensable.
Determination of the sun protection factor by the international method is therefore performed on humans: volunteers are treated with the formulation to be tested, exposed to UV light under controlled laboratory conditions, and the sun protection factor is determined on human skin.

Skin analyses
To evaluate the effect of newly developed actives and formulations on particular areas of the skin, Green River Polymers carries out a range of skin analyses. In essence these determine:
- moisture
- lipid content
- elasticity and firmness
- the average density of the most pronounced wrinkles
- the average depth of the most pronounced wrinkles
- the average volume of the most pronounced wrinkles
- urea content
- pH value
